MCB calls on Conservative Party to remove shadow justice minister over leaked messages
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) on Tuesday called on the main opposition Conservative Party to remove the Shadow Justice Minister Robert Jenrick from his position after leaked messages on social media revealed his support for a far-right account on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter) that shares anti-Islamic content.
The Council urged Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch to take a decisive stance against such actions. In a statement, the Council said, “With the scale of Islamophobia endemic within the Conservative Party, and recently being propagated by some of the most powerful figures in the world, Ms Badenoch cannot allow what appears to be support for such Islamophobic and extreme content from a member of her shadow cabinet.”
These demands received backing from the Labour Party Network, which emphasized the importance of firmly addressing hate crimes. Anas Altikriti, President of the Cordoba Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue, commented, “Unfortunately, successive governments and opposition parties in Britain exhibit negative stances towards the values they claim to uphold. This poses a serious threat not only to Muslims and immigrants but to the entire fabric of British society.”
This controversy arises amid ongoing debates about increasing manifestations of Islamophobia within the Conservative Party and among some of its leadership, raising questions about how to protect Muslim rights and ensure equality in the UK. Observers warn that continued neglect of these issues could jeopardize British societal cohesion and deepen divisions.
