Belgium to be first EU country banning disposable vapes
Belgium will become the first European Union country to ban the sale of disposable vapes starting in January, citing concerns over youth usage and environmental harm, media outlets reported.
Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke said disposable e-cigarettes are designed to attract young users, many of whom start smoking with vapes rather than traditional cigarettes. The move is part of Belgium’s broader anti-tobacco efforts.
A 2022 WHO survey found that 12% of Belgian youths aged 11 to 18 had used vapes in the past month, double the number reported in 2018.
While some argue that vapes help adults quit smoking, officials worry that their fruity flavors and colorful designs entice children.
Belgium also hopes the ban will reduce waste from the devices, which contain plastics, chemicals, and non-rechargeable batteries.
France and Germany are drafting similar laws, while the UK plans to prohibit disposable vapes starting in June.
