The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Tuesday that ISIS executed 54 Syrian soldiers near the town of Al-Sukhnah in Homs Desert, central Syria.
According to the rights group, the soldiers were captured and killed while attempting to flee following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The Observatory said that the executions occurred near a gas station and are among the most brutal incidents in the region recently, adding that the group also carried out arrests and executions of fleeing military personnel in desert areas and Deir ez-Zor.
This incident highlights the escalating security chaos in Syria amid recent political and military developments. ISIS is reportedly exploiting the turmoil to regain influence in some areas, with increased activity in Homs Desert and Deir ez-Zor.
