150-year-old mosque reopens in Albania following restoration work

The village of Guri i Kalit in Albania celebrated the reopening of its 150-year-old historic mosque after extensive restoration efforts.

Hundreds of Muslims gathered for the event, joined by prominent religious figures, including Berat’s Mufti Sheikh Amirqon Fathaj and Kukës’ Mufti Sheikh Islam Hoxha, along with other imams and community leaders.

Sheikh Fathaj expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the restoration, highlighting the mosque’s role as a long-standing center for worship and Islamic education. Sheikh Hoxha also praised the village’s unity and the mosque’s significance in teaching Islamic values across generations.

Project supervisor Kurab Shehu voiced pride in the community’s dedication, noting the collective efforts that made the restoration possible. The celebration concluded with certificates awarded to 340 individuals and families who supported the project, including members of the Albanian diaspora.

Last month, Albania saw the reopening of another mosque, Kodër Hani Mosque in Pukë, restored in collaboration with local and international charitable organizations.
