The African Union has called for a thorough investigation into alleged human rights violations in Sudan, urging the prosecution of those responsible through fair and impartial legal processes to end the ongoing violence in the country.
This call comes amid escalating abuses against civilians, including retaliatory campaigns by the Rapid Support Forces in eastern Gezira and accusations against the Sudanese army of killing dozens of civilians, including children, in airstrikes.
Adama Dieng, the African Union’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, reiterated the AU’s commitment to peace, stability, and the protection of human rights in Sudan.
Dieng expressed deep concern over rising violence and civilian casualties, particularly in Gezira state and the Damazin area, while highlighting reports of mass killings, extrajudicial executions, sexual assault, kidnapping, torture, and looting.
The AU’s advisor also raised alarms about reports of widespread violations following the defection of Rapid Support Forces leader Abu Aqila Kikil, emphasizing that ending violence in Sudan requires a global commitment to justice and accountability, with the African Union pledging continued support to the Sudanese people in their quest for peace and stability.
