TikTok Deletes Uyghur Rights Videos Amid Censorship Claims

TikTok has faced backlash for deleting videos related to Uyghur human rights violations, sparking allegations of censorship, RFA reported yesterday.

Uyghur student Nefise Oguz uploaded a video of a debate on the Uyghur genocide with Turkish politician Doğu Perinçek, only to find it removed the next day for violating community guidelines. Other Uyghurs abroad report similar deletions, suggesting a pattern of suppressing content critical of the Chinese government.

Despite TikTok’s claims of independence from the Chinese government, critics argue it aligns with Beijing’s censorship practices. Reports indicate that TikTok’s algorithms promote pro-China narratives while suppressing dissent. Previous incidents include the suspension of accounts belonging to Uyghur activists, raising concerns about the platform’s commitment to free expression.
