Muslims open mental health centre in Detroit, Michigan
Members of the Islamic Center in Detroit, Michigan’s largest city, have opened a mental health center within the Islamic Center’s premises, with officials, specialists, and Muslim community members in attendance.
The center aims to offer various mental health services, staffed by clinical psychologists, social workers, and therapists. It will provide free therapy sessions, health and social consultations, host annual health fairs, and participate in special-needs initiatives.
Danish Hassan, Director of the Islamic Center, highlighted the importance of addressing mental health issues that, if ignored, can lead to isolation and despair, emphasizing that the new center is more than just a healthcare facility; it serves as a safe haven for those facing mental health challenges.
Last month, the Muslim Federation of South Florida launched a mental health initiative to support Muslims in Florida by reducing suicide rates and preventing self-harm. First launched in 2022 as part of the “SoFlo Muslims” campaign, this ongoing initiative includes workshops aimed at suicide prevention and addressing its root causes to help the Muslim community thrive.
