UNRWA: Over 600,000 children in Gaza suffer severe trauma and are deprived of education
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported that more than 600,000 children in Gaza are suffering from severe trauma and are deprived of education.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated on ‘X’ that the schools for these children have been turned into overcrowded shelters for displaced people and are no longer suitable for teaching.
Lazzarini’s remarks came as the new school year begins worldwide, including in UNRWA schools in the West Bank. However, due to the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, education has been suspended for the second consecutive year in the region, noting that while children across the region are returning to UNRWA schools, Gaza’s children are an exception.
