Ongoing war, climate crisis put lives of thousands of Sudanese children in danger, warns UNICEF

According to a UNICEF spokesperson, the situation for children in Sudan is becoming increasingly dangerous as the ongoing civil war and climate crisis intensify, which could result in the deaths of tens of thousands of children in the coming months.

James Elder, who recently arrived in Sudan, called the situation “critical” and pointed out that Sudan now has the highest number of displaced children in the world.

Elder reported that around 10,000 children are being displaced daily due to the conflict, which has affected five million children over nearly 500 days, stressing that many displaced children end up in camps without access to clean water, medical care, or proper sanitation.

Elder further noted that climate change is exacerbating the crisis, with Sudanese children now facing twice as many heat waves as their grandparents did 50 to 60 years ago, warning that children lack the resilience needed to cope with this constant, intense heat.
