A new report by a specialized media observatory has revealed a significant increase in violations against journalists and media institutions in Yemen during 2023, with a total of 54 recorded violations, indicating a noticeable deterioration in the conditions of journalists.
According to the report issued by the Media Freedoms Observatory, 95% of the total violations were against individual journalists, activists, and social media users, reaching 51 cases, while violations against media institutions were only 3 cases, accounting for 5% of the total number.
The report indicated that these violations were observed in 10 different governorates, with Sana’a city leading with 15 incidents, followed by Marib with 11 cases, then Aden with 9 cases, Hadramout with 7 cases, and Taiz with 6 cases. The governorates of Hodeidah, Shabwa, Ibb, and Lahj each recorded one violation.
In conclusion, the observatory emphasized the necessity of exerting pressure by the international community and organizations concerned with freedom of opinion and expression to release detained journalists and ensure respect for freedom of opinion and expression in Yemen.
