Scientists endeavor to spot cancer signs prior to symptoms

Researchers at a newly established cancer institute at Cambridge University have initiated a study aimed at identifying cellular changes occurring years prior to tumor formation, the Guardian reported.

This research is expected to pave the way for innovative approaches to cancer treatment, according to the scientists involved.

The Early Cancer Institute is focused on finding ways to treating tumours before they reveal symptoms. The research will exploit recent discoveries which have shown that many people develop precancerous conditions that lie in abeyance for long periods.

The latency for a cancer to develop can go on for years, sometimes for a decade or two, before the condition abruptly manifests itself to patients, said the institute’s director.
