Rising Islamophobia prompts Muslims in Canada to devise app to combat hatred

Canadian media reported on Tuesday that a group of Muslims in the country have designed an app to document cases of Islamophobia, in a move to combat hatred against Muslims.

The media reports, viewed by Shia Waves Agency, said that “incidents of Islamophobia have increased in Canada following the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, prompting the Muslim minority to design a new app.”

The app, which is called IMIRT, will work to document and report cases of Islamophobia and crimes resulting from this dangerous phenomenon facing Muslims.

The reports also indicated that the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and the National Council of Muslims in Canada have provided financial support to produce the app, which provides Muslim families with a way to record cases of Islamophobia they experience.

Toronto police have recorded a 168% increase in cases of Islamophobia and hate speech against Muslims.

The new app has revealed that there are strained relations between Muslims and police in Canada, as only 29% of the cases of Islamophobia have been reported to the police.

For her part, Canada’s Special Representative for Combating Islamophobia, Amira Elghawaby, praised the launch of the app as a “significant step for victims who do not feel comfortable reporting cases of Islamophobia directly to the police.”

Elghawaby said: “Through such initiatives, Canada is taking steps to create a safer environment for its diverse communities, and the goal is to improve the understanding and investigation of hate crimes by law enforcement authorities.”
