ASEAN concerned about growing violence in Myanmar

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has expressed deep concern about the violence in military-ruled Myanmar.

“We were deeply concerned with ongoing violence in Myanmar and urged the immediate cessation of all forms of violence and the use of force to enable safe and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance and inclusive national dialogues,” ASEAN leaders said in a statement after summit discussions on Wednesday.

Incidents like the military’s bombing of a village in the northern region of Sagaing last month, which killed dozens of people, has worsened the crises.

Despite international pressure, Myanmar military chief Min Aung Hlaing has completely ignored a plan to end the violence, which was agreed at a special ASEAN summit two years ago.

It should be mentioned that Rohingya Muslims represent the largest percentage of Muslims in Myanmar, with the majority living in Rakhine state.
