Rohingya Activist Urges Muslim World to Hold Myanmar Junta Accountable

Rohingya rights campaigner Yasmin Ullah has called on the Muslim world to confront Myanmar’s military junta after filing a landmark genocide complaint in Indonesia against president-elect Min Aung Hlaing.

Ullah, founder of the Rohingya Maiyafuinor Collaborative Network in Canada, is among 11 plaintiffs who submitted the complaint to Indonesia’s attorney general, accusing Min Aung Hlaing of human rights abuses against the predominantly Muslim Rohingya minority. Indonesia’s courts operate under “universal jurisdiction,” allowing prosecution of grave crimes committed abroad.

Myanmar’s military seized power in a 2021 coup and has long been accused of targeting ethnic minorities, particularly the Rohingya. Since 2017, over one million Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh, with thousands also reaching Indonesia, mainly in Aceh province. Ullah, a genocide survivor, works directly with refugees there.

Min Aung Hlaing, who led the 2017 crackdown, was elected president last week by pro-military lawmakers, maintaining control in civilian guise. Ullah hopes the Indonesian legal process will compel him to face victims, some of whom reside in Indonesia.
