Intense Fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine State Displaces Over 20,000

In late February 2025, more than 20,000 civilians were displaced from Kyaukphyu township in Myanmar’s Rakhine state due to escalating clashes between the military and the Arakan Army (AA), RFA reported.
The fighting, which intensified near the junta’s Danyawaddy naval base, has left residents in dire need of food, medicine, and shelter.
An aid worker reported that the number of displaced individuals surged from 10,000 to approximately 20,000 in just two weeks, with many seeking refuge in temporary shelters, including tents and open fields. Vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and pregnant women, are particularly affected, facing severe shortages of essential supplies.

The AA has gained significant ground, capturing 14 of Rakhine state’s 17 townships since late 2023. Kyaukphyu, strategically located on Ramree Island, is vital for both military and economic interests, with China planning a deep-sea port in the area as part of its Belt and Road Initiative.
As the conflict continues, the military has responded with aerial and naval assaults, further escalating tensions. Local residents fear increased violence, as both sides continue to reinforce their troops. The international community is urged to provide assistance to those affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
