Extreme Heat Wave Ravages Central Myanmar, Claiming Over 100 Lives

A devastating heat wave has struck central Myanmar, with scorching temperatures killing nearly 100 people in just four days, RFA reported yesterday.

The hardest-hit region was Monywa township in Sagaing, where the elderly and sick, including infants as young as one month old, were most vulnerable, the source mentioned.

Temperatures soared to 45°C (113°F), leading to a surge in heatstroke and dehydration cases.

Power outages have exacerbated the crisis, prompting some families to seek refuge in hotels.

Extreme heat has plagued Myanmar throughout the current hot season, with over 40 fatalities per day reported in early May. Relief is expected as the annual monsoon rains approach in the coming weeks.
