Maldives Bans Tobacco for Generation Born After 2007
………..
The Maldives has begun enforcing a new law banning tobacco use for anyone born in or after January 2007, making the island nation one of the first in the world to adopt a “tobacco-free generation” policy. The law, launched by President Mohamed Muizzu earlier this year and officially implemented on November 1, 2025, prohibits affected individuals from purchasing, using, or selling tobacco products.
According to the Health Ministry, the ban applies to all citizens, residents, and visitors, and aims to reduce chronic diseases linked to smoking, including cancer and heart disease. The ministry said the nationwide prohibition on e-cigarettes and vaping devices remains in effect for all ages. Retailers must verify customers’ ages before sales, with fines of up to $3,200 for selling to minors and $320 for using vaping products. Authorities said the move supports a broader plan to protect public health and curb tobacco-related harm.
