Maldives Plans to Plant 2 million Trees in 2025

The Maldivian government has set an ambitious goal to plant 2 million trees by the end of 2025 as part of its Five Million Tree Plantation Program, Xinhua reported. Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, announced this initiative, which was launched by President Mohamed Muizzu, during a recent statement reported by PSM News.
The primary objectives of the program are to combat climate change, enhance biodiversity, and protect endangered native tree species. The initiative will focus on planting various native tree varieties at risk of extinction, including fruit trees, shade trees, flowering trees, and those used in traditional Dhivehi medicine.

Over five years, the program aims to introduce a total of 90 varieties of fruit-bearing and vegetable-producing plants, thereby contributing significantly to the country’s ecological balance and food security. To promote sustainability, the government plans to develop a mobile application that tracks the planting of each tree, providing information on its location and the individual responsible for its planting.
