An Israeli airstrike on Evin Prison in Tehran on June 23 killed 71 people, according to Iranian judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir. Reuters reported that the victims included prison staff, conscripts, detainees, visiting family members, and nearby residents.

The strike came at the end of an air war with Iran, expanding Israel’s targets to symbols of Iran’s government. Evin Prison is known for holding political prisoners and foreign nationals, including two French citizens, Reuters said.

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot called the strike “unacceptable,” saying it endangered French detainees. Surviving prisoners have been moved to other facilities in Tehran province.
