Nonviolence Organization Calls for Preventive Strategies on International Day to Prevent Violent Extremism
—————————————
The Global Nonviolence Organization (FreeMuslim Association) has called for comprehensive preventive strategies to counter violent extremism, stressing that effective responses must address its intellectual and cultural roots before it turns into acts of terrorism that threaten social stability.
In a statement issued to mark the International Day of Preventing Violent Extremism When It Leads to Terrorism, the organization said that violent extremism should not be viewed as an isolated criminal act, but rather as the outcome of environments shaped by hate speech, social marginalization, lack of justice, and limited awareness of universal human values. The statement also warned against the distortion of religious concepts that, in their original form, promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
The organization noted that some media platforms and unregulated public discourse contribute to social polarization, while economic and political crises, along with unequal opportunities, make segments of youth more vulnerable to recruitment by extremist groups.
It urged governments and international institutions to adopt broad preventive approaches, including promoting nonviolence and dialogue in educational curricula, addressing the social and economic roots of instability, and supporting moderate religious institutions to advance messages that reject violence and reinforce peace. The statement also emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring equality among citizens without discrimination.
The organization concluded that protecting human dignity and safeguarding fundamental rights constitute the first line of defense against extremism, reaffirming its commitment to promoting peace and calling for global cooperation to build societies based on mutual respect and coexistence.
