UN Day and World Development Information Day Marked on October 24 with Calls for Global Justice and Sustainable Progress

The international community is marking October 24 with two major observances highlighting the importance of cooperation, access to information, and inclusive development.
The United Nations was formally established on October 24, 1945, following the end of World War II. Two years later, the UN General Assembly designated the date as UN Day, to raise public awareness of the organization’s mission in promoting peace, security, and international cooperation. A 1971 resolution later encouraged member states to honor the occasion as a public holiday, emphasizing respect for global collaboration in advancing human rights, social justice, and sustainable development.
October 24 is also recognized as World Development Information Day, established in 1972 by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and officially adopted a year later by the General Assembly. The awareness day focuses on the role of information-sharing in addressing development challenges.
According to UN agencies, more than 160 developing countries continue to struggle with limited resources, poverty, gender inequality, and inadequate access to electricity and clean water. Events organized around the world on this date include educational programs and policy discussions aimed at promoting fair economic growth and effective use of technology and knowledge.
