Massive Fire in Central Jakarta Displaces Hundreds of Families

A large residential fire ripped through a densely populated neighborhood in the Kemayoran district of Central Jakarta late Monday night, destroying scores of homes and leaving hundreds of people without shelter, local authorities said.

The blaze, which began around 8:55 p.m. local time, quickly spread through a cluster of semi‑permanent houses in the Kebon Kosong area, prompting a major firefighting operation. Emergency crews deployed 35 fire engines and approximately 175 personnel to battle the flames, eventually bringing the fire under control by around 11:30 p.m., with full extinguishment reported in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to Jakarta’s Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat), the fire damaged around 250 homes, and officials estimate that about 330 households — roughly 620 people — have been displaced. Three residents suffered injuries in the blaze and were treated at local hospitals.

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency has set up emergency shelters and relief services for the affected families, with temporary tents established in nearby open areas to provide shelter and basic supplies. Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.

While investigators have not yet determined the exact cause, preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit in one of the residential structures. The cause remains under investigation.
