Strong Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia; Tsunami Alerts Issued and Later Lifted

A strong earthquake struck the Northern Molucca Sea off the coast of Ternate city in eastern Indonesia on Thursday, April 2, initially measured at a magnitude of 7.8. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) later revised the magnitude to 7.4.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers, raising initial concerns over potential tsunami waves. Authorities issued tsunami alerts for coastal areas of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. These warnings were later lifted after monitoring showed no major dangerous waves.

The earthquake caused damage on land, with at least one reported death and reports of building damage in affected areas. Authorities in Indonesia and neighboring countries continue to monitor the situation and urge residents in coastal regions to remain cautious.

Tsunamis, generated by sudden undersea earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides, are among the most destructive marine natural disasters. They are characterized by long wavelengths and high speeds, capable of causing significant destruction when reaching land.

Officials classified this quake as a “major” earthquake on the Richter scale, where quakes above magnitude seven are generally considered capable of causing destructive impacts in coastal communities.
