Jakarta Mosque Blasts Injure 54 During Friday Prayers; Teen Suspect Under Investigation

At least 54 people were injured after two explosions struck a mosque inside SMA 72 High School, located within a navy compound in Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading district, during Friday prayers, The Guardian reported.
Police identified the suspect as a 17-year-old male student, who was also injured and is currently undergoing surgery. Witnesses reported hearing two loud blasts around midday as worshippers gathered, causing panic as smoke filled the mosque.
Authorities said a toy submachine gun marked with white supremacist slogans—referencing the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks—was recovered from the scene. Investigators are examining whether the suspect was inspired by extremist content or motivated by bullying and revenge, as suggested by early reports.
Most victims suffered burns and glass injuries, with 33 students still hospitalised. Police cautioned against speculation about terrorism, saying the type of explosive used remains under investigation.
Jakarta Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that officers are conducting a thorough probe into the suspect’s background, while ensuring citywide security remains stable. Authorities are also offering trauma support to affected students and staff.
