Mount Dukono, situated in eastern Indonesia on Halmahera Island, erupted again on Friday, sending a dense column of volcanic ash soaring 1,100 meters (3,608 feet) above its summit, Anadolu Agency reported.
Bambang Sugiono, an official at the Dukono Volcano Observation Post under the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), reported that the eruption took place early in the morning.
“The ash plume reached approximately 1,100 meters above the summit, or 2,187 meters above sea level. Thick gray to black ash was seen drifting eastward. The eruption is still ongoing at the time of this report,” Sugiono stated.
A similar eruption, with an ash column reaching 1.1 kilometers, was also recorded on the morning of June 24.
Mount Dukono is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes and has been erupting continuously since 1933. Indonesia, located within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is among the world’s most seismically active countries, hosting 130 active volcanoes.
On Thursday, Indonesia raised the alert level for the southern Ile Lewotolok volcano from 2 to 3, although the highest alert level remains at 4. Since June 27, Ile Lewotolok has shown a significant increase in volcanic activity.
