Deadly Floods, Landslides Hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island
At least 14 people have been killed after heavy floods and landslides struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, Anadolu Agency reported on Saturday.
It cited the national disaster agency saying torrential rain has caused flooding up to 3 meters (10 feet) high in some areas, inundating over 1,000 homes.
The floods and landslides have hit 13 sub-districts across the region, the source added.
According to the state-run Antara news agency, the flooding was triggered by the overflowing of the Rongkong and Baliease rivers, which also caused damage to 104 houses and swept away 42 completely.
The disaster also destroyed roads, a bridge, and 14 motorbikes and cars, the agency added.
Authorities said they have evacuated 1,385 people to safe places as a result of the flooding.
Home to 229 million Muslims, Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world in terms of population.
