Indian court sentences Gujarat police officers who flogged Muslims to 14 days in prison

Gujarat high court sentenced four policemen on Thursday to 14 days’ simple imprisonment for contempt of court as they had violated Supreme Court’s orders about treatment of accused in police custody by flogging members of Muslim community in full public view while holding them against a pole.

The incident had occurred in Kheda district’s Undhela village on October 4, 2022. The people flogged had been detained for allegedly pelting stones at a garba event.

The SC bench convicted the cops of failing “to protect the faith of the people in the judiciary”.

Violence against Muslims has been a rampant scene in India under Modi government’s nationalist agenda.
