Outrage after banning Muslim headscarves at a university in India

In light of the violations faced by Muslims in India, especially Karnataka, an Indian university has banned the wearing of headscarves for Muslim students on campus or in the classroom.

India’s University of Mangalore has modified its uniform policy to impose a complete ban on Muslim female students and faculty members not wearing headscarves on campus.

The Mangalore campus had earlier allowed Muslim female students to cover their heads with uniform shawls, which led to protests from Islamophobes and Muslims in the BJP.

Hijab haters claimed that allowing Muslim students to wear the headscarf on campus violated a Karnataka High Court order last March, and accused the college director and authorities of failing to address the issue.

There are about 40 Muslim students at Mangalore University, and following the decision to ban the headscarf, the Muslim students submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to allow the wearing of the headscarf in the classroom.

Fatima, a Muslim student, says, “Nothing happened after the court ruling. We attended the exams peacefully, but we received an unofficial note recently to attend lectures without a headscarf. We went to the principal by order of the Karnataka Education Department and tried to talk to him. He said he was helpless. “

Karnataka has recently witnessed unprecedented protests in schools and colleges after some students opposed the wearing of the headscarf for Muslim women in the classroom.
