West Bengal election 2026: sporadic violence reported as polling continues under heavy security
—————————————
Voting in India’s West Bengal state elections has been marked by isolated incidents of violence, including clashes between rival party supporters and reports of a crude bomb explosion in Murshidabad district during the first phase of polling on April 23.
As of April 26, election authorities say polling is continuing across the state under tight security, with no statewide disruption reported. The most serious incident occurred in Murshidabad’s Nowda area, where a crude explosive device injured several people and briefly disrupted voting locally.
Security forces were deployed across sensitive constituencies, with dozens of people detained in connection with election-related disturbances. Officials have classified thousands of polling stations as sensitive due to the risk of intimidation and violence.
Despite the incidents, the Election Commission said voting operations remain active across all phases, and investigations into the reported clashes and explosions are ongoing.
It should be mentioned that West Bengal is home to a considerable Muslim population.
