Mob Attack in West Bengal Targets Muslim Meat Traders Ahead of India’s Republic Day
———————————
Three Muslim meat traders were assaulted by a large crowd in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India, just before the country’s 77th Republic Day, raising concerns about communal violence and tensions in the region.
According to reports seen by Shia Waves Agency, around 40 to 50 people attacked the traders — identified as Feroz Ali (35), Akash Ali (37), and Ansar Ali (29) — in the Julpia area near Bishnupur police station. The assailants allegedly subjected the men to physical violence and insults, accusing them of operating “illegally” and using derogatory communal language.
The traders, who run a halal meat shop in Kachari Market and are long-time residents of Baruipur, were initially involved in a minor dispute over the quality of meat with customers earlier in the day. Despite offering refunds and additional meat in an attempt to resolve the disagreement peacefully, tensions escalated later in the evening.
Local police have registered a case and arrested three suspects so far. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend additional individuals involved in the attack.
Human rights activists have condemned the incident as an example of targeted violence against Muslims and warned that it reflects broader patterns of communal labeling and hostility. They have urged authorities to ensure accountability and protect the rights and safety of all citizens.
