Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) on Wednesday launched a three-day international conference titled “The Quran and Science,” bringing together academics, researchers, and thinkers from India and abroad to examine the relationship between Quranic teachings and contemporary scientific thought.

The conference opened on January 28, with a formal inaugural ceremony held at the Dr. M. A. Ansari Auditorium. Proceedings began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the honoring of participating guests. Speakers at the opening session highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue between religion and modern systems of knowledge as a means to better understand today’s intellectual and scientific challenges.

Several participants described the conference as an important academic initiative aimed at moving beyond narrow ritualistic interpretations of religion. They emphasized that the Quran encourages the use of reason, reflection on the universe, and ethical self-examination in daily life.

Other presentations addressed the relevance of the Quran in an era of rapid technological change, stressing that its ethical and human values remain applicable across time and place. Discussions also focused on contemporary social challenges, including misconceptions about the Quran, weakening family structures, and the impact of value gaps on younger generations.

The opening ceremony also featured the launch of a specialized academic publication. The conference is jointly organized by the university’s Department of Islamic Studies as part of broader efforts to promote scholarly research and constructive dialogue between Quranic texts and modern science.
