Delhi Enforces Tough Restrictions as Air Pollution Reaches Severe Levels
……….

Authorities in India’s capital, New Delhi, introduced a new set of emergency measures on Wednesday to curb worsening air pollution, Reuters reported. Air quality in the metropolitan region, home to around 30 million people, has remained in the “severe” category for several consecutive days, with the air quality index frequently exceeding 450.

In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management activated the fourth and highest stage of its graded response action plan for Delhi and surrounding areas. The measures include banning vehicles that do not meet the latest emission standards, restricting the entry of older diesel trucks, halting construction activity and introducing hybrid schooling.

The city government also ordered both private and public offices to operate at 50% attendance, with the remaining staff working remotely, except for essential services. Local authorities said registered construction workers affected by the shutdown would receive financial compensation of 10,000 rupees each.

India’s environment ministry directed officials to allow construction and demolition work only where proper waste-management systems are in place. Additional steps were announced to ease traffic congestion, including removing illegal roadside encroachments and creating dedicated corridors during peak hours.

Officials reiterated their commitment to improving air quality, as seasonal winter smog continues to blanket Delhi. Pollution typically worsens during this period due to low temperatures trapping emissions from vehicles, construction and agricultural burning, posing serious health risks to residents.
