Deadly Clashes Intensify Along Thailand–Cambodia Border
…………..
Deadly clashes have escalated along the disputed Cambodia–Thailand border, forcing more than half a million people into evacuation centres, The Guardian reported. At least 20 people have been killed and nearly 200 injured since the fighting resumed on Sunday, marking the worst violence since a brief conflict in July.
Cambodia accused Thailand of launching fresh airstrikes on Thursday and violating international law by deploying heavy weaponry and troops across the frontier. Thailand denied the claims, saying its military responded with artillery and mortars after Cambodian forces allegedly targeted Thai positions the previous night. Both sides blame each other for undermining a ceasefire negotiated in July by the US, China and Malaysia, with US president Donald Trump again offering to mediate.
Political uncertainty in Bangkok may further complicate efforts to defuse the crisis. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signalled plans to dissolve parliament, a move analysts say could encourage a tougher nationalist approach ahead of elections. Thai officials ruled out third-party mediation for now, insisting trust must be restored before talks resume.
More than 400,000 people have been evacuated in Thailand and over 100,000 in Cambodia, according to authorities. Religious and international leaders, including Pope Leo XIV, have expressed concern over civilian casualties and the deteriorating humanitarian situation.
