Debate Ignites Over “Communalization” of Indian History in NCERT Textbooks
—————————-
Recent revisions to history textbooks by India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) have ignited a fierce debate, with critics alleging a “communalization” of historical narratives, particularly concerning medieval India, Muslim Mirror reported.

While proponents argue these changes aim to “decolonize” Indian historiography and challenge long-standing Marxist interpretations, opponents contend they distort facts to align with a specific ideological agenda.

The controversy often centers on the depiction of Muslim rule, with some revisions accused of downplaying or omitting significant periods and contributions, or altering the characterization of historical events like the jizya tax. Critics, including historians and political figures, express concern that such alterations, sometimes linked to broader Hindu nationalist narratives, could foster division and present a biased understanding of India’s complex past to young students.

Conversely, supporters claim the revisions emphasize indigenous dynasties and a more balanced view of India’s civilizational achievements, moving away from what they term a Eurocentric historical perspective.
