India’s Telangana government has officially notified holidays for the 9th and 10th of Muharram, marking the mourning days of Tasua’ and Ashura, The Siasat Daily reported.
According to the Telangana calendar for the year 2025, the government declared July 5 and 6 as holidays in observance of Muharram. The holiday on July 5 (9th Muharram) will be optional, allowing institutions discretion to remain open or closed, while July 6 (Ashura) is designated as a general holiday.
Earlier, the government had tentatively listed the holidays for June 5 and 6 before the official sighting of the crescent moon.
While the government has declared these holidays, schools across Telangana have yet to announce their official holiday schedules. For the 9th of Muharram, which falls on a Saturday, schools have the option to either observe the holiday or continue regular classes.
Shia Muslim communities in Hyderabad and across Telangana are preparing to observe Muharram with traditional processions and mourning rituals, marking the significance of this period in the Islamic calendar.
