At least 11 people died and 47 were injured in a crowd crush outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first IPL title win, The Guardian Thursday.

The team had distributed limited free passes online, but an overwhelming crowd of up to 300,000 people gathered, far exceeding the stadium’s 35,000 capacity. Chaos erupted when people without passes tried to force entry, and some reports allege police used force to control the crowd.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called the incident a tragic and unexpected turn during what was meant to be a celebratory event for cricket fans.
