Delhi Residents Protest “Illegal” Demolition Notices in Muslim-Majority Area

Hundreds of families in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar face forced evictions after the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) issued demolition notices for homes on Khasra 281-285, despite a Supreme Court order only authorizing action on adjacent Khasra 279, the Clarion reported. Residents, many living there for decades, allege the DDA is exceeding legal bounds without surveys, hearings, or relocation plans.
“They’re targeting Muslim areas selectively,” said retired teacher Iqbal Khan, noting unauthorized colonies elsewhere remain untouched. Locals cite voter IDs and property receipts as proof of legitimacy. Legal teams are preparing petitions to halt the June 11 demolitions.
The DDA claims compliance with court orders but refuses to clarify the expanded scope. Activists accuse the agency of exploiting the verdict for political optics ahead of state elections.
With protests brewing at Jamia Millia Islamia University and no political support, residents like 65-year-old Razia Begum fear losing lifelong homes: “Breaking my house is breaking my soul.”
