India: President Sings Waqf Bill into Law Amid Increasing Crackdown on Protest

President Droupadi Murmu has approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill shortly after Parliament passed the controversial legislation following extensive discussions in both Houses, The Times of India reported.

This comes amid increasing crackdown on protests. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar police have issued warnings to mosques, leading to anger among Muslim communities. Imams and local committees are being pressured to sign bonds against protesting the Waqf Bill, which critics claim undermines Waqf properties and Muslim institutions.

Authorities have increased police presence around mosques, with religious leaders expressing that this harassment contradicts democratic rights. DCP Harish Chander stated that the notices are precautionary to maintain order. Muslim leaders argue this targets dissent against Muslims specifically, questioning the selective policing. Similar warnings have been issued in several districts, with some elderly imams summoned to police stations.
