Supreme Court Affirms No Discrimination in Education for Rohingya Children

The Supreme Court of India has ruled that there should be no discrimination in education, including for Rohingya immigrant children facing challenges in school admissions, Thelawadvice.com reported. This decision came during a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, which sought directives for granting school admissions and government benefits to Rohingya refugees without requiring Aadhaar cards or citizenship proof.

Justices Surya Kant and NK Singh emphasized the importance of ensuring equal educational opportunities. Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves highlighted the difficulties faced by Rohingya refugees in securing school placements. The Court requested information on the refugees’ current residences to explore relief options, stressing that personal details of minors should remain confidential.

The matter is set for another hearing on February 28. Previously, the Delhi High Court dismissed a similar petition, directing petitioners to approach the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. An appeal related to the case is also pending before the Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for February 17.
