India Sends to Space Its First Space Docking Mission

India successfully launched its inaugural space docking mission, the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, Al Jazeera reported. The PSLV-C60 rocket lifted off at 16:30 GMT, carrying two small spacecraft, each weighing approximately 220 kg.

This mission aims to demonstrate in-space docking technology, which is vital for future satellite servicing and the operation of India’s planned space station. If successful, India will become the fourth country, following the United States, Russia, and China, to achieve this capability.

The satellites are equipped with advanced payloads, including an imaging system and a radiation-monitoring device to gather data for future human spaceflight missions. ISRO Chairman S Somanath indicated that actual testing of the docking technology could occur around January 7, 2025. This launch signifies a major advancement in India’s space ambitions and enhances its position in the global aerospace landscape.
