Over 400 Rohingya Families in Jammu & Kashmir Face Power and Water Supply Cuts
Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir have ordered the disconnection of power and water supplies for 409 Rohingya refugee families in Jammu, escalating efforts to deport them back to Myanmar, Anadolu Agency revealed yesterday. A revenue document reveals that supplies will be cut in seven clusters, reflecting rising hostility towards Rohingyas, particularly from right-wing groups.
Many Families have expressed fear for their family’s future, noting that local landlords, pressured by officials, may evict them despite paying rent and utility costs. Reports indicate nearly 5,000-6,000 Rohingya refugees reside in about 40 clusters in the region.
Since the violent crackdown by Myanmar’s military in August 2017, over 750,000 Rohingya have fled to safety. Amnesty International highlights severe human rights abuses, including over 24,000 deaths, mass rapes, and the destruction of homes. The Indian government continues to view Rohingyas as illegal immigrants, further complicating their plight in Jammu.
