Assam Eviction Drive: 250 Homes Demolished Amid Rising Tensions

Authorities in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district have demolished 250 homes in an eviction drive that resumed shortly after violent protests led to the police shooting two men, Muslim Mirror reported yesterday.

The demolitions occurred in Kachutali-1 village, with Additional Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Saikia confirming that the drive would continue. These operations target alleged encroachments on land designated for Scheduled Tribes under Assam’s Land and Revenue Regulation.

Earlier, on September 9, nearly 240 homes were bulldozed, primarily affecting Bengali-origin Muslims from Morigaon district, who had lived in the area for decades. Following a violent clash on September 12, which resulted in two fatalities and injuries to 33 others, officials issued a two-hour eviction ultimatum.

Despite ongoing legal challenges, the district administration insists that the demolitions aim to prevent resettlement. Local leaders have criticized the government for violating residents’ legal rights amid rising tensions.
