India: 14 Killed in Andhra Pradesh Pharma Plant Explosion
At least 14 people were killed and numerous others injured in a devastating explosion at the Escientia pharmaceutical manufacturing unit in Atchutapuram Special Economic Zone, Andhra Pradesh, Xinhua reported yesterday. The blast, which occurred near the reactor site during lunchtime, triggered a major fire, prompting emergency response teams to rush to the scene.
Officials reported that the factory, which operates with 381 employees in two shifts, had reduced staff presence due to the lunch break. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the total number of injured varies, with reports indicating between 18 and 33 casualties.
Images from the site showed ambulances arriving as grey smoke billowed from the factory. An official from the Anakapalli collectorate confirmed the rising death toll and stated that further details would be provided once rescue efforts are complete. Authorities have deployed firefighters to control the blaze and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
