India’s Supreme Court Orders Task Force for Healthcare Worker Safety

India’s Supreme Court has mandated the formation of a national task force to enhance security for healthcare workers following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata, Arab News reported yesterday.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, has ignited widespread protests and strikes by doctors across the country, demanding justice and better safety measures.

The court described the crime as “horrific” and highlighted the systemic safety issues in medical facilities, including a lack of security personnel and inadequate protective measures. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the urgent need for an enforceable national protocol to ensure safe working conditions for medical professionals.

As protests continue, the court noted that the nation cannot wait for further tragedies to implement essential reforms. The gruesome nature of this case has drawn parallels to past incidents of violence against women in India, underscoring the urgent need for action.
