Heavy Monsoon Rains Cause Deadly Roof Collapse at New Delhi Airport

Heavy monsoon rains in India led to a deadly incident at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday after part of the Terminal 1 canopy collapsed, killing one person and injuring six others, CNN reported.

The airport received around 228 mm (9 inches) of rain over 24 hours – three times the normal June rainfall for the city, the source mentioned, adding that the collapse caused flight disruptions, with 8 cancellations and 47 delays.

Authorities said the collapsed section was part of an older building inaugurated in 2009, not the recently refurbished areas. However, opposition politicians blamed Prime Minister Modi, alleging the refurbishment was “half finished” and “inaugurated in a hurry.”
