India: Heat Wave Strikes Leave 33 Poll Officers Dead during Last Day of General Elections

At least 33 poll personnel lost their lives due to a devastating heat wave that struck parts of India during the country’s recent general elections, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.

The deaths occurred primarily in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where voting took place in the election’s final phase, the source added.

Scorching temperatures reaching over 49°C (120°F) have impacted several Indian cities, with the capital New Delhi recording an unprecedented high of 52.9°C (127.2°F).

Authorities have confirmed additional heat-related fatalities in other states and pledged financial assistance to the families of the deceased poll workers.
