India experiencing extreme heatwave with temperatures soaring above 45C

Northern India, including capital Delhi, is experiencing extreme heatwave with temperatures continue to soar above 45C, India’s weather department said yesterday.

The department added that on Sunday Najafgarh district in Delhi recorded a temperature of 47.8C, the highest in the country this season.

Indian summers, which extend from March to September, are usually hot and humid, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) confirming that the country is likely to experience longer and more intense heatwaves this year.

Delhi city officials asked schools to shut with “immediate effect” due to the blistering heat, according to a government order quoted by the Hindustan Times Tuesday, cutting short the term by a few days.
