Deadly Clash Between Indian Forces, Maoist Rebels Amid National Elections
Amidst the nation’s ongoing parliamentary elections, a fierce gun battle erupted between Indian security forces and Maoist rebels in the forests of central India, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 insurgents, Reuters reported yesterday.
The clash occurred on Tuesday in the Abujhmad area of the Maoist-affected Bastar region, following a similar encounter on April 16 that left 29 rebel fighters dead in a nearby district.
The Maoists, who follow a Marxist-Leninist ideology, have waged a protracted guerrilla-style insurgency against the government, seeking to empower impoverished farmers and laborers and assert control over the region’s natural resources.
