Indian authorities seek regulations on AI ahead of national elections

The Indian government has issued an advisory to tech companies, requiring them to obtain approval before launching “unreliable” or “under-tested” generative AI models that could impact the electoral process, Al Jazeera reported.

The move marks a shift from previous hands-off approach of Modi’s administration towards AI regulation in April 2023.

The advisory was prompted by a backlash faced by Google’s Gemini for a response regarding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hinting his policies could be described as fascist, leading to accusations of violating Indian laws.

According to the news agency, Google acknowledged the issue and has pledged to enhance its system.
