Amnesty International Warns Unregulated Arms Trade Fuels Human Rights Violations
———————————
Amnesty International has warned that the unregulated global arms trade is accelerating human rights violations and contributing to conflicts and civilian suffering worldwide.
In a recent report, the organization said irresponsible transfers of weapons and law-enforcement equipment have been directly linked to abuses including violations of the right to life, personal security, and protection from torture and ill-treatment. It added that so-called “less-lethal” weapons are often used by authorities to suppress protests and silence political opposition.
According to Amnesty, the consequences of uncontrolled arms flows extend beyond immediate violence, undermining economies, destabilizing societies, and increasing risks for vulnerable groups such as women, children, and marginalized communities.
The report calls for stricter global controls on weapons transfers. It urged a comprehensive arms embargo on Israel, citing Amnesty’s earlier findings that Israeli actions in Gaza amounted to genocide. The organization also called for expanding the existing arms embargo on Sudan to cover the entire country, noting that modern weapons continue to reach conflict areas such as Darfur despite international restrictions.
Amnesty also urged governments to negotiate binding international rules on autonomous weapons and strengthen efforts to ban torture equipment and restrict abusive law-enforcement tools.
The organization emphasized that international humanitarian law prohibits inherently indiscriminate weapons—such as cluster munitions, anti-personnel landmines, chemical weapons, and environmental weapons—because their use almost inevitably harms civilians and civilian infrastructure.
